How to get more reviews without being annoying

Reviews decide both your ranking and whether people call. Here is a simple, respectful system that works.

Almost everyone reads reviews before choosing a local business, and a steady stream of recent ones helps you appear in the map results. Most owners know this and still do not ask, usually because asking feels awkward. A system removes the awkwardness.

Ask at the peak moment

The best time is the moment a customer expresses satisfaction — when they say the job looks great, or thank you as they leave. Not a week later in a newsletter. In that moment, say something like: 'That is great to hear. Would you mind saying that in a Google review? I can text you the link right now.'

Remove every obstacle

  • Use your short Google review link so it takes one tap, never 'search for us on Google'.
  • Send it by text while you are still with them; texts get read, emails do not.
  • Print the link as a QR code on receipts, invoices, counter cards or the back of a business card.

Never do these

Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, do not ask staff or family to post, and do not filter who you ask based on how you think they will rate. All three break platform rules and can wipe out the reviews you already have.

Reply to everything

Thank positive reviewers briefly and specifically. For a negative review, reply once, calmly: acknowledge the problem, apologise for their experience, and invite them to contact you directly to put it right. You are not writing to the reviewer — you are writing to the hundred future customers who will read that exchange.

A calm reply to a bad review builds more trust than a page of five-star ratings.
